Good Tidings

By | 04/09/2017

For once, I am preparing a post three weeks in advance.  Reason being that in just over a week or so I need to have prepared 21 swaps for the next Creative Inkers’ Team Swap.  For this swap we have to use at least one item from the new Holiday Catalogue but at the time of preparing this post we were not permitted to show new product just yet hence the delay in posting.  I wasn’t sure what to do for this swap as I needed to keep my expenditure down.

It turned out to be an interesting challenge and I am pleased with the results so far.  I have come up a card in two different colour combinations.  I’m not sure which one I will choose for the actual swap.  Let me know which one you prefer?

Soooo, I chose the new Glad Tidings Stamp set which using the two-step stamping technique creates a beautiful holly leaf and berries.

For the first card, I have used traditional colours – Cherry Cobbler, Garden Green, Wild Wasabi, Real Red, Always Articoke (this is a first for me – never knew quite where to use this colour before) and Gold Embossing Powder on Very Vanilla cardstock.

The holly was stamped directly on the top layer of the card.  The greeting, on a seperate piece of cardstock, die cut using the Stitched Framelits and layered with dimensionals.

The second card also used Very Vanilla card stock and Gold Embossing Powder but for the rest I have used several ink colours from the Neutrals range to create a sepia effect.

Sahara Sand and Crumb Cake for the leaves, Soft Suede and Early Espresso for the berries.

I still don’t know which I prefer….. normally I would assume I’d like the more traditional colour combination but I really quite like the Neutrals.

Then I got to thinking….. what other colour combinations could you use?  Shades of grey and blue, maybe?  That would probably look cool.   Either way, that is the advantage of making your own cards.  There are no rules and if you want to change out the colours, why not?

I actually came up with another card but I’ll save that for another time.

Happy stamping!

Wisteria Wonder – Number of Years

By | 29/08/2017

When I was first married, we lived in a house that had a large patio with a pergola overhead.  Growing over this pergola was beautiful old wisteria.  Early spring it would gradually become a mass of pale purple (mauve, lilac).  It would look glorious for a week, then the spring breezes would hit and the petals would fall like a gentle snow.  Beautiful.

A while ago when I was ‘surfing’ the web I came across THIS post from Esther Howard and it brought back those lovely memories.  I just had to CASE it.

And as you may have noticed with the previous shaving foam posts, once I find something I really enjoy, I tend use it a lot.  In this instance, I found myself stamping the inside of the card as well.

Later I was thinking…. ‘what shall I do for my July Thank You cards…… oh I know, I do some more wisteria’.  This time, I not only stamped the card and the insert, why not the home made envelope was well?

You might notice that the 3×3″ so called “Thank You” card says “Happy Birthday”.  I tend put a card like this in with any of my orders with the view that my customer will use the card themselves and ‘share the love’ as it were.  And we all tend to be more likely to send birthday cards instead of thank you cards.

These are all very simple cards that use card stock, stamps and ink.  What could be simpler?

I appreciate that I may have got a little carried away, but I really enjoyed making these cards and envelopes so why not.

Don’t think it hasn’t cross my mind to try other colours…. I will try and resist the urge.

Number Of Years Photopolymer Stamp Set

The Number of Years photopolymer stamp set is easily over looked as being a ‘numbers’ stamp set however there are also a number of other images that can work together to make beautiful floral images.  The various different flowers combine with the ‘greenery’ to create a colour bouquet.  Once of my favourites that I haven’t used for a while.  So it was good to be reminded of other ways to use this set.

You can also purchase the ‘Large Number Framelits’ which will neatly die cut the numbers, the small flag and the banner.

Happy stamping!

Daisy Delight Birthday

By | 07/08/2017

I do love the way Stampin’ Up! encourages casing projects.  (CASE = Copy and share everything).  The other day I came across THIS post from Stampin By Hannah, and she had in turn cased the card from THIS post by Teneale Williams.  Each card is basically the same but we have all added our own little tweek to it.

This simple card shows off one of the sheets from the lovely Delightful Daisy Designer Series Paper beautifully.  This is a lovely pack of  double sided paper combining floral images and simple patterns.

Layered onto Night of Navy, Daffodil Delight and then topped with Vellum Cardstock, torn at the bottom and some Baker’s Twine it makes the perfect base for the  ‘Happy Birthday’ greeting.  In this instance I have cut the greeting twice, once each with Night of Navy and Daffodil Delight and ever so slightly off set them.  I believe that make the greeting stand out just that little bit more.

You do have to be careful with Vellum as any adhesive you use will show through and be quite visible.  To reduce this, I have adhered the greeting onto the vellum before attaching to the card.  That way I was able to put a few spots of adhesive behind the greeting to secure it to the card.  It may not be obvious but the edges of the vellum are completely free.  The Baker’s Twine not only looks great but it helps to hold down the top of the vellum.

The ‘Happy Birthday’ is a thinlit available for purchase by itself or as part of a bundle with “Happy Birthday Gorgeous” stamp set to save 10%.

Daisy Delight Window Box

By | 04/08/2017

One of my favourite suites in the new 2017/18 Annual Catalogue is the Delightful Dasiy suite.  The combination of a cute stamp set and matching punch are fabulous and even better still, are available as a bundle thus saving 10%.  Then adding the beautiful Delightful Daisy Designer Series Paper, Double Stitch Ribbon and topped off with Facet Gems….. what can I say.

So when I came across THIS project from Angela’s PaperArts, I just had to give it a go.

This project also uses the Window Box Thinlits (also a favourite) but it has been extended to be taller.  The thinlits set also includes a selection other dies that can be added to create detail on the box which is what I have done on alternate sides.  For the ‘other alternate’ sides I have layers some of that lovely Delightful Daisy Designer Series Paper onto Whisper White Card stock and then onto the Daffodil Delight box.

The top of my box is a little different to the original as I have stamped and punched three daisies.  Thank goodness for the matching punching which saves on the ‘fussy cutting’.  Topped of with leaves die cut using thinlits from the Rose Garden thinlits set and gold Faceted Gems.

Lift Me Up

By | 13/07/2017

This project seems a little different to my usual projects.  I’m not quite sure what is different about it.  Maybe it is the colour combinations?  But then again, it is red, white, blue and yellow…… or should I say Real Red, Whisper White, Night of Navy, Soft Sky and Daffodil Delight.  Nothing strange about that either.  I don’t know what it is, maybe you do.

If I was to do this card again, I would probably switch the Real Red and Daffodil Delight card stock around.

Anyway, the balloon is die cut using the Up & Away thinlits and the greeting is from the matching Lift Me Up stamp set.  Up & Away Thinlits Dies

Once again, the background is done using the Embossing Paste and the cloud mask.  It adds texture that is, perhaps, not apparent in the picture.

For something different the Up & Away thinlit set can be used to make a really cool mobile for a child’s room.

If you would like to know more about this stamp and die set you may find this video interesting.

Sparkling Embossing Paste

By | 08/07/2017

Winter is here and the temperatures have dropped.  Perfect for the mid winter Christmas theme, along with the rain perfect conditions for paper crafting and getting a head start on those Christmas cards.

A lot of my friends are in the “keep Christmas in December” brigade, but then the the silly season hits,  end of the school year, Christmas Parties, ballet recitals etc. and they run out of time to make their Christmas Cards.  I tend to start early in the year and make one or two cards at a time and by November I have more than enough cards, usually all different.

This year I started at the beginning of July, a little later than usual but I should still be OK.

For today’s project I have a very simple card using the Santa’s Sleigh stamp set and matching thinlits.  I must admit I’m a fan of the Less is More club and this card certainly fits.  He’s such a regal looking reindeer, stamped using Soft Suede on Crumb Cake card stock, the wreath is Garden Green on Wild Wasabi.  The bow just shines with gold embossing on Real Red card stock.

With a closer angle you might just be able to make out the sparkle on the background.  Before applying the Embossing Paste, I mixed in a little Dazzling Diamonds.

It really is very pretty in real life and just lifts the card as only a bit of bling can.  The greeting is from the same stamp set and is gold embossed.

Simple, but elegant.

Mid Winter Christmas – Santa’s Sleigh

By | 05/07/2017

With Stampin’ Up! releasing the “Christmas in July” promotion I thought it would be a good opportunity to do a few mid winter Christmas cards.  So here is my first offering.

It uses the Santa’s Sleigh stamp set and the matching thinlet dies.  I’ve had this set for quite some time but this has been the first opportunity to have a bit of a play with it.  This set includes lots of Christmas related images including a reindeer, mini Christmas wreath, bows and presents along with the sleigh and trees as seen here.

I love the delicate filigree look on Santa’s Sleigh using the Gold Foil Card on Real Red Cardstock.  But in saying that, it’s the little teddy that finishes it off nicely.

And if you look closely you may notice that I have also used Stampin’ Up!s new embossing paste to create a very subtle background.

The embossing paste is fast drying and extremely easy to use.  Used with a variety of masks the result are quite remarkable.

Add a few drops of re-inker and you can change the colour and for the extra bit of bling you can add some Dazzling Diamonds.

Move Me – Lemon Lime Twist

By | 26/06/2017

Having looked back on my recent posts I have noticed that they are all from a similar colour palette.  Easy to tell that it is a palette that I am comfortable with and tend to move towards naturally.

So for this post I thought I’d try something a little more adventurous colourwise for me.  How about using some of the new In Colors, in this case Tranquil Tide and Lemon Lime Twist.

The Lemon Lime Twist is quite a bold colour and I wasn’t sure I liked it to start with, but it has grown on me and pairs beautifully with Tranquil Tide.

To create this card I started with water colour paper and an aqua painter to gave it a light covering of Lemon Lime Twist which I then left to dry.  While I do intend to purchase a Lemon Lime Twist re-inker, I don’t have one a present.  As an alternative I gently squeezed the closed inkpad so that some ink tranferred onto it’s lid and then used the aqua painter to pick up colour and tranfer to the water colour paper.  This resulted in a lightly water washed effect on the cardstock.

The larger butterfly has been die cut from Tranquil Tide cardstock using the new Move Me thinlits and painted with Wink of Stella Glimmer pen for that touch of bling.  The smaller butterflies were 2 step stamped on Whisper White using the new stampset You Move me and then also die cut.  The greeting is from the Work of Art Stamp set.  All of this was mounted on Tranquil Tide cardstock and a Lemon Lime Twist cardbase.

The You Move Me stamp set and Move Me thinlits are intended to be an interactive set.  As you move the butterfly or humming bird up and down, itImage result for stampin up move me thinlits nz appears to fly.  This can be seen in the video HERE.

As a bundle you can save 10%.

Shaving Foam Re-revisited

By | 22/06/2017

For another project using the same Beautiful You images I used the shaving foam background more as a mat and embellishment rather than a total back ground.

I wasn’t originally planning to put the two little ‘flags’ to the right of the image however, as frequently happens, I had a little unexpected ink on my fingers which I managed to smudge on my project….. “it’s not a mistake, it’s a creative opportunity”.

And who’s to say that you can only use this technique to only create backgrounds and mats.

Why not try die cutting?  For this example I have used water colour paper, an aqua painter and Soft Sky ink.  The background doesn’t need to be complex, after the butterflies are the focal points.  The butterflies have been die cut using the Butterflies thinlits and the greeting is from the ever popular and versatile Butterfly Basics stamp set. And don’t forget the bling!

Punches images also work well.

Not sure if you can see in the image to the right but the flowers are discreetly coloured as well.  To do this I have stamped the image on Whisper White cards stock, one at a time, and then gone over the image with a Blender Pen which pulls in colour from the stamp image onto the white card stock.  It is very subtle but there.

Really the options are limitless.  You only need one or two colours and if you make your own background and embellishments as I have here, you know that everything will match.  For all of these examples, I have justed Dapper Denim and Pool Party in shaving foam and have added a Whisper White, Soft Sky to compliment.

By now you can tell I have a great time ‘playing’ with shaving form and Stampin’ Up! re-inkers.  The possibilities are endless.

Happy stamping!

Musical Thank You

By | 19/06/2017

As some of you may know, I play in the Manukau Concert Band and yesterday we had the privilege to join with the SGI Victorious March Band for our annual friendship concert.  This concert is always a highlight of our year.   We are made to feel very welcome and in a mark of appreciation I was ask by my band to make a thank you card to send to SGI and this is what I came up with.

I’m probably being a little mean showing you as some of the stamps have retired, but if you look closely you can see the new “Sheet Music” background stamp, which I thought was appropriate given the nature of the event.  Equally, while some of the stamps have been retired there are many other stamp sets in the new catalogue that could be used equally well.

You don’t get a sense of perspective here but this card is A5 sized (21 x 14.9cm rather than the stand 14.9 x 10.5cm) which is twice the size of a standard card.  When my band sends cards, generally everyone signs them and given that there are 40-45 of us we need plenty of room.

So, for the details, the background music was stamped with Crumb Cake ink on Very Vanilla Cardstock, then the “Thank You” (retired) was embossed with gold embossing powder.  To finish of the stamping I have used another retired stamp (sorry) Avant Garden to stamp and stamp off around the greeting.

All of this has been matted and mounted in alternating Very Vanilla and Pacific Point card stock.

Thank you to Linda Dalke for the inspiration for this card.

Happy stamping!
